People Working Well

Launched in 2020, People Working Well is a comprehensive mental health
promotion and prevention initiative supporting workplaces across British Columbia.
By offering tailored training, sector-specific resources, and consultancy services,
the program supports employees and employers to prioritize mental well-being
and create psychologically safe workplaces. Employers and employees can
access resources such as the Learning Hub, webinars, and a resource library, or
engage directly to customize training for their teams. People Working Well currently
supports the following sectors:

• Tourism and hospitality industry: Workers can access interactive online
courses on workplace mental health, psychological safety, respectful
workplaces and work-life balance, while supervisors and managers receive
specialized training to build healthy workplace cultures. The program also
provides access to mental health and psychological safety consultants who
guide organizations in creating safe work environments.
• Healthcare: Professionals and organizations are directed to CMHA BC’s Care
for Caregivers program which offers peer support, webinars, and Care to
Speak, a confidential, peer-based support service.
• Community social services: Provides access to mental health and
psychological safety consultants who guide organizations in creating safe work
environments, as well as free mental health resources and training courses to
equip workers with the skills needed to support their own well-being.

Workplace mental health is a critical issue, with many employees experiencing
stress, burnout, and other mental health challenges that can impact overall wellbeing, productivity, and job satisfaction. According to WorkSafeBC, mental health
injury claims increased by 38% between 2019 and 2021, and 40% of all mental
health claims came from the health sector in BC. This program responds to an
increased focus on the expectations of organizations and employers to provide a
psychologically healthy and safe environment for employees.
