A Heartfelt Farewell to a True Leader

This past week, we said goodbye to a true CMHA South Cariboo matriarch — our Executive Director (ED), Susann Collins. Susann’s legacy with CMHA South Cariboo began back in 2000 when she was hired as a casual employee. From there, she became our first Homeless Outreach Worker, and in 2013, she stepped into the role of Executive Director.

When Susann first took on the ED role, the organization operated on a budget of $615,703. By the time she retired on June 30th, that budget had grown to over $1.4 million — a direct reflection of her relentless work ethic, unwavering commitment to mental health, and her belief that everyone in the South Cariboo deserves access to support, no matter their circumstances.

Over her 12 years as Executive Director, Susann led our team through the 2017 wildfires, the COVID-19 pandemic, and was instrumental in welcoming the Women’s Centre into the CMHA family. She oversaw the launch of numerous vital programs, including the Clubhouse Garden, Community Navigator Program, and Legal Aid Community Partner to name just a few.

But Susann was more than just our Executive Director — she was a mentor, a guide, and a friend. Personally, since starting with CMHA nearly three years ago, she has been a huge part of my journey. Her door (and heart) was always open. No matter how busy she was, she always made time for my pop-ins and my “Got a minute?” check-ins.

Though Susann may be stepping away from her role, her legacy will continue to shine for many years to come. In recognition of her incredible impact, the Clubhouse has been officially renamed the Susann Collins Clubhouse — a small but heartfelt tribute to a woman who led with compassion, an open mind, and a fierce dedication to the people of the South Cariboo.

On June 30th, we gathered in the newly renamed Clubhouse to send Susann off in style. It was a beautiful farewell filled with love, food, laughter, memories, and more than a few tears. Clubhouse clients and CMHA staff came together to decorate the space and celebrate a leader who gave so much of herself to this community. Speeches were shared, hugs exchanged, and Susann was honoured in the most fitting way — with warmth, heart, and deep appreciation.

As one era ends, another begins. We’re thrilled to welcome Marnie as our new Executive Director. Like Susann, Marnie is a long-time resident of 100 Mile House and comes into this role from our Homeless Outreach Program. She brings a powerful mix of leadership, empathy, and tenacity. Marnie leads without judgment, sees the best in everyone, and we have no doubt she’ll continue to build on the incredible foundation laid by Susann — while creating her own remarkable legacy.

Here’s to new beginnings and honouring the amazing footsteps we follow.
