The Seasons are Changing

That time of year is here again. The leaves are beginning to change, the mornings are becoming crisp, and the familiar smell of chimneys coming back to life is filling the air. Summer is showing us that she is coming to an end.

For many of us, the end of summer can feel like the beginning of a long, dark winter. But before winter arrives, we are gifted with the beauty of fall. The reds, oranges, and golds come alive, transforming our landscape into something truly magical. Here in the South Cariboo, we all know winter is coming, and soon those vibrant colours will be covered in white, and the temperatures will drop. But winter brings its own beauty too: brilliant blue skies, frozen lakes, sparkling snow, and dazzling icicles. The changing of the seasons reminds us that even the longest and darkest seasons hold beauty, even if it may be hidden from view for a time. No matter how difficult or frightening change may seem, there is always something beautiful waiting to be found. Sometimes we just have to look a little closer, be a little more patient, and trust that even beneath the coldest snow, a new life is quietly preparing to bloom again. And before we know it, winter will be behind us, and the wonderful cycle will begin all over again.

As I was driving to work this morning and noticing the changing colours of the landscape, I was reminded that whether we are ready or not, change is inevitable. Whether it is the seasons coming and going or changes in our own lives, nothing stays the same forever. We cannot stand still and hope everything remains unchanged. Sometimes change happens so slowly that we barely notice the small hints along the way. Other times it catches us completely off guard when we least expect it. And sometimes we charge headfirst into change so quickly that it leaves us spinning in circles.

Change can be tough, especially when it is something we did not plan for. But just as the seasons must change for life to move forward, it is important to remember that every ending creates space for a new beginning. The leaves must fall, plants must rest, and nature must hibernate through the winter so that new life can emerge in the spring.

I know that for me, change can be scary. The unknown of what lies ahead can feel overwhelming. I get comfortable in my routines and daily habits, so when something changes, expected or unexpected, it can leave me feeling unsettled for a while. But one thing I have learned from the magical changes of the seasons is that no matter how dark or challenging a season may be, the one ahead often holds new possibilities, beauty, and growth.

A dear friend of mine once said that in order for good things to flow into our lives, we first have to clear out what no longer serves us. It was not until this morning that I truly understood how much truth there is in those words. It is just like the changing seasons. The leaves must fall to make way for the vibrant new ones that will appear in the spring.

So do not be afraid of change, no matter how scary or uncertain it may seem. Change often opens doors we never knew existed and creates opportunities for growth, healing, and new experiences. Embrace the changes that come your way, even when they feel uncomfortable. You might just be surprised by what is waiting for you on the other side.

Remember to be kind to yourself, practice self-care, and reach out for help if you need it.
